The Next Generation Steals the Show at Hill Briefing

May 18, 2011 at 4:00 pm by Jennifer Jones

It's always inspiring when family forest owners come to DC and give all of us a dose of the real deal. Today, at Hill briefings for House and Senate staffers, we had Janet and Craig Olver, from Pennsylvania, and Nancy Livingston from Wisconsin, who are featured in AFF's Stem the Loss report.

These speakers were joined by Slade Lail and his sons, Carson and Garrett; The Lail sons shared their own statements and I couldn't share anything better with you today than their own words:

Carson

My name is Carson Lail. There has been one consistent and stabilizing force in my life and that is our family tree farm. Living in metro Atlanta does not provide many kids my age to really experience what I consider the true outdoors.
That is why me and my friends love to go visit our tree farm. So many of us have learned so much about forestry and how to properly take care of the environment. And it's not the kind of learning you can get from the classroom.

I plan on following in my father's footsteps and passing on proper forest management and education to my children and my children's children.

Garrett

Hello, my name is Garrett Lail. I am almost 11 years old and we have had our tree farm my entire life. I am so fascinated by all the things my Dad does at the farm and I love it now that I'm old enough to help.
We brought our Boy Scout troop to visit one weekend and we got to watch and help with a controlled burn, look for Indian artifacts and learn about water erosion. We all learn something new every time we go there and once I get there, I never want to leave and I always look forward to going back.

Thank you Carson and Garrett!
